Our route starts at Bowman Bay on the north side of the park then walks across the bridge to visit Goose Rock, West Beach, and North Beach.
Since we are connecting different sections of the state park, we will periodically be in earshot of the road and parking lots. Participants must be comfortable walking across the Deception Pass bridge. There is a narrow sidewalk and wire that separates pedestrians from traffic and a waist-high railing on the water side. However, someone who is afraid of heights may be uncomfortable. Also, please note that Whidbey Naval Air Station is just south of the park, so sometimes the jets are flying practice runs. It is impossible to predict. With all that in mind, if you want to see the best of Deception Pass on foot, join me!
We will travel at a moderate but social pace with frequent stops to enjoy the changing views and to look for wildflowers. Note that your leader hikes at 1.5 mph the first hour as it is mostly uphill. Then we'll pick up the pace. We may also see shorebirds, ducks, and eagles. We will stay together as a group since there are many trail intersections. While the elevation gain is only 1,400', there are a few short but very steep sections with roots and rocks in the trail. Plan for a full day of exploring!
This is a mentored hike for Susan Willhoft. My mentor is Kelley Chaddock.
My Goal: Have fun mindfully experiencing this place together.
My Expectations:
- All are prepared to hike whatever the weather.
- Group stays together (to see one another at all times) and supports one another.
- That we treat one another with respect, compassion and understanding.
- That you're on time at the parking lot prepared and ready to be social and engaging.
My Style:
- Hike at a pace comfortable for all. Encourage care while traversing roots and rocks in the trail.
- Appreciate nature and pointing out the beauty we see around us.
- I’m a leader that appreciates engaged participants.
