Our route includes visiting Bowman Bay, Lighthouse and Lottie Points on the north side of the park then walking across the bridge to visit West Beach, North Beach, and Goose Rock. We will traverse through forests, shorelines, rocky outcroppings, and sand dunes.
Since we are connecting different sections of the state park, we will periodically be in earshot of the road and parking lots. Participants must be comfortable walking across the Deception Pass bridge. There is a narrow sidewalk and wire that separates pedestrians from traffic and a waist-high railing on the water side. However, someone who is afraid of heights may be uncomfortable. Also, please note that Whidbey Naval Air Station is just south of the park, so sometimes the jets are flying practice runs. It is impossible to predict. With all that in mind, if you want to see the best of Deception Pass on foot, join me!
We will travel at a moderate but social pace with frequent stops to enjoy the changing views and to look for early spring wildflowers. We may also see shorebirds, ducks, and eagles. We will stay together as a group since there are many trail intersections. While the elevation gain is only 1,400', there are a few short but very steep sections. Plan for a full day of exploring!
