This hike is part of the Conditioning Hiking Series. Please do not sign up for this hike if you are not a participant in the course. (Participants: this is a CHS 2 level hike.) A Cougar Mountain "History Ramble" (8.5 miles, 980' gain) — Revisit Puget Sound mining and railroad history while hiking on a mountain where coal miners worked for 100 years, until 1963, mining 11 million tons of coal. This loop hike is through deciduous forest and woodlands and will include stops at remnants of an old locomotive turntable, a still occasionally smoldering -- after 50 years -- coal mine shaft, an old mine cart and other mining relics, and the huge grated air shaft into the old Primrose Mine. Bonus CHS credit for walking on the (totally safe, but spooky) huge mine grate cover!! Green Trails Map 203S.
