8:00 am at Issaquah Park and Ride
This hike is the Ray Westberg Trail which is near Thorp and Ellensburg in the Eastern Cascades. The hike is 6 miles round trip with about 1700 feet of elevation gain. The trail is steep in spots but the terrain is open with views of the Stuart Range, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. This is also a premier wildflower spot in April and early May. The trail is named for a popular wrestling coach from Ellensburg High School. There is a memorial for Westberg on the high point of the ridge. The hike is not described in any hiking books and there are no available maps. The trail is popular with locals and is easy to follow. Meet at at 8:00 am at the Issaquah Park and Ride. Wear sturdy boots as there may be snow on the ridge-crest. Carry plenty of water and bring sunscreen as there are few trees along the route. Pace will be moderate and steady. Questions? Contact me by email but if you need to cancel or have a problem you can call me at 206-283-5086 up until 8 pm. I will be out hiking the day before this hike so contact me by Friday if you need to or else leave a message. This hike is part of the CHS course series. Please do not sign up if you are not a participant in this course. NOTE: Please note that this is the same hike that is being lead earlier in the month for CHS under the name of Manastash Ridge. This is a trail that has several different names, including Book Mountain. But it IS the same hike and you might not want to duplicate it.
