Day Hike - Cedar Butte (Olallie State Park)

Last-minute, short hike up forested butte near Rattlesnake Lake, just 1.75 miles each way with 900 feet of elevation gain. Reach a summit with views toward the north, from Mount Si to Mailbox Peak, and several other peaks in between.

Meet at 3:45 pm at Cedar Butte trailhead ready to hike. We will do introductions, review pacing and trail conditions, discuss group goals, and start hiking soon after.

From I-90 at the east end of North Bend, take Exit 32 (436th Ave SE) and head south on 436th Ave SE, which becomes Cedar Falls Road SE. About 3.5 miles from I-90, pass the parking area for Rattlesnake Lake and soon turn left into the parking area for the Cedar Falls Trailhead (Iron Horse State Park.) Restrooms available at trailhead. Discover Pass required.

This is an easy hike in the Cascade foothills of 4.0 miles with 950 ft of elevation gain. The route starts on the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail (formerly Iron Horse/John Wayne Trail then climbs up the side of Cedar Butte through a nice forest of moss covered vine maple and cedar trees.

We will hike as a group at ~2 mph. Will stop for a clothing adjustment as needed, and enjoy the view for ~15 minutes at the summit. Should be about 2 hours from start to finish.


All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before attending an in-person Mountaineers activity during our COVID-19 response. Please remove yourself from any upcoming activity if you are unable or unwilling to follow The Mountaineers guidance at the time of the program.

Also, to help ensure your safety and the safety of our fellow hikers, the leader asks that you only carpool to the trailhead with other members of your household registered for the same trip. 

All participants will need to have a face covering (mask, bandanna or muff), hand sanitizer and a backpack containing the 10 essentials. Wherever possible, all group member will maintain the 6 ft minimum social distancing protocol and be ready to pull up face covering over mouth and nose when this is not possible passing others on the trail and at the trailhead.
