This is another former fire lookout in keeping with my theme. It was the description of this hike on the WTA site that got me thinking about fire lookouts as destinations: Any time you can hike to the site of an old fire-watch station, you know you'll have grand views--after all, those fire spotters needed a 360-degree panorama to be effective. This trail is at the end of a long dirt road and is often very brushy. However, A conversation I had the a forest service ranger earlier this year indicates it was cleared (at least somewhat) earlier this year. Futhermore, I understand that the road has been recently graded. So this is our chance! The first part of the trail is on an old mining road and is reported to be very rocky. There is a potentially tricky crossing of Bear Creek and finally a fern forest that accounts for the brushiness. It is not my intention to scout this hike, so please be prepared for anything. If there is time and interest, we can attempt to explore the Bear Basin Mines after visiting the top. I have found very little information on this mine, but the few clues I have found seem to indicate there is a lot to be seen.
