This loop hike travels among cool rock formations, lakes, and the Columbia River. 13 miles, 1,500' elevation gain.

Let's explore this shrub steppe ecosystem along the Columbia River. This area was shaped by ancient floods and has beautiful basalt cliffs, mesas, and ephemeral pothole lakes that are fed by irrigation water from nearby agricultural fields.
We'll aim for a 2.0 - 2.25 mph average moving speed, keeping in mind that sunset will be at 4:30pm. Please bring a headlamp with batteries just in case.
Richard will offer a brief talk on the unique geologic features in the area.

First of two hikes east of the mountains: Sunday, 11/9 will be a loop on the Umtanum Ridge Crest.
