PLEASE DON'T REGISTER UNTIL YOU HAVE REVIEWED THE NOTES BELOW, YOU ARE SURE YOU ARE AVAILABLE AND THE MEETING TIME AND LOCATION WORK FOR YOU.

If you are hoping for a ride you will have a better chance if you set your profile to "Open" and provide carpool information such as the area you live in and locations you can easily reach by transit to meet a driver.

BY REGISTERING THIS LEADER CONSIDERS YOU MADE A COMMITMENT TO THE TRIP. It's only good form to cancel in the event of an injury, illness or an emergency. Even if there are people on the wait list it's often difficult to move them up close to the trip date. THANK YOU!

We will explore the trail up Amabilis Mt. from the Cabin Creek Snopark, exit 63 off I-90. The route is virtually all uphill going and downhill coming back over its 8-mile round trip distance and approximately 2,300 ft. gain.

Much of the trail below to the fork will probably have been groomed the weekend before. Above the fork, that’s about half of the way up, is a loop that we will probably ski counter clockwise. This section takes us up and over the summit of Amabilis. It is very rarely groomed. It can be icy and rutted or have soft new snow depending on recent snowfall, temperature and amount of recent ski and snowshoe activity. The most difficult part of the trip is usually descending the fairly steep ungroomed section. It’s OK to take skis off and walk down this part though this can be tiring.

By late February there is often a pattern of cold nights and warm days where the snow freezes over-night and gradually thaws during the day (less so in shaded areas) and may start to freeze again later in the day.

Please note: This is a demanding N3 level trip and the conditions we will find on the day are often difficult to predict in advance. You will need to have good herringbone climbing skills for the ascent and strong sustained wedge including wedge turns for the way down. Also, the descent can be quite tricky if the trial is icy and rutty, especially for those using classic track skis without metal edges and normal softer Nordic track ski boots.

Nordic backcountry skis or track skis with metal edges are recommended, but an experienced skier could also manage on classic no-wax track skis. Please consult the leader if you wish to use other types of ski.

If you are uncertain of your ability and stamina or the equipment you have to manage this type of trip please contact the leader.

You may carpool from our meeting place at North Bend Safeway, meeting at 8:45 am or meet us at the Crystal Springs or Cabin Creek Snopark an hour later.

All vehicles taken to the trailhead will require WA Snopark Passes. Passes need to be purchased in advance: contact the leader for more information. Taking everyone who signs up will be dependent on enough drivers with suitable vehicles for winter snow conditions volunteering. Full directions to both locations and other trip information will be provided several days prior to our trip.
