This trip is a second part of a two-part ride series starting with the optional Bikepack - Canon Beach trip from 4/16-4/19. This South Beach→Yachats ride includes scenic highlights like expansive sandy stretches, dramatic rock formations, stream crossings, and coastal views.
RWGPS Route: Yachats→Newport South Beach SP Fat Bike
Campsites have been reserved at South Beach State Park campground for 8 people. Shared costs are expected to be $100 for campsites and shuttle.
Fat bike rentals are available to rent nearby at Bike Newport (541-265-9917). If you are arriving on Sunday 4/19, be aware that the bike shop is closed that day. Call to arrange a Sunday afternoon pickup or else pick your bike up on Saturday 4/18. We will ride on Monday 4/20. Rental prices as of 2/2026 are $50 per day but that could change.
There will be several rides. Day 2 will be the organized 23 mile ride. The other days are open and flexible:
- Day 1 4/19. Arrival day. Flexible, open exploration riding north to Yaquina Bay South Jetty or other destination.
- Day 2 4/20. Ride South Beach→Yachats or the reverse depending on wind direction. Departure time to be determined depending on tides, which I haven't looked at yet. The ride duration when I rode it was 3.5 hours with 5 mph winds or so and ride time was 2:50.
- Day 3 4/21. Open. Would be more interesting to drive somewhere and ride a different beach, perhaps. TBD.
- Day 4 4/22. Pack up and head home. Must leave campsite by 1 PM.
Meet on 4/19 early evening at South Beach State Park campground, sites E14 and E15. Some participants will arrive late morning and early afternoon from the Bikepack - Canon Beach trip and will be riding on the beach during the day, heading either north to Yaquina Bay South Jetty or south. The campsites are not available until 4 PM. The ride from South Beach to Yachats (or vice-versa) will be on Monday 4/20, and the departure time is yet to be determined.
Required Equipment
- Fat bike in good working order. E-bikes not allowed.
- The trips are day rides. Just bring lunch, hydration, snacks, etc.
- Car camping equipment and food, etc., as needed.
- 10 essentials
- Standard tool kit and accessories for maintenance, trouble, and safety
- Be aware that the salt spray will get on your chain and make it rusty. This is not much of an issue but it can be very disappointing if you're not expecting it. Hose it off at the campground.
