Beginner Snowshoe - Paradise

Edith Basin from Paradise Jackson Visitor Center. This is rated a "beginner" trip, meaning no badge prerequisites, but probably not suitable for those with no prior snowshoe experience. Route will be up to 5 miles and 500' elevation gain (200 feet per mile). Contact leader with any questions.

We will meet at Longmire National Inn parking lot, near the museum and the rest rooms at 8:30. Chain up if required. Gate on road to Paradise should open around 9:00 a.m. If gate, road or weather conditions rule out Paradise, we will snowshoe (or hike, if not enough snow) a route starting from Longmire. Participants can organize carpooling to Longmire, and from Longmire to Paradise. More info closer to trip.

From the trailhead north of the Visitor Center, we will take the Edith Creek Route, as shown on the Mount Rainier National Park Winter Recreation Map.  We will probably cross Edith Creek on the bridge above Myrtle Falls and head up into Edith Basin. Exact route will depend on weather, any avalanche warnings, and other prevailing conditions.  We will avoid avalanche terrain.  This trip is suitable for participants who may or may not have Mountaineers snowshoe badges, but have some experience with snowshoes and winter outdoors. Length and elevation gain are toward the high end of The Mountaineers' "Easy" classification. Expect average rate of climb of 200 feet per mile, with some sections steeper and some more gradual. Leader's permission is required because it is more challenging than many "beginner" trips and is not suitable for a "beginner" with no snowshoe experience or knowledge regarding appropriate gear or clothing, etc.   A Mountaineers Basic Snowshoe course is strongly recommended for those with no prior experience.  Please contact the leader with any questions. More information will be sent by email to registered and wait-listed participants closer to the event.
