Beginner Snowshoe - Golden Gate (winter)

Trip

Beginner Snowshoe - Golden Gate (winter)

We will snowshoe from Paradise, probably on the Golden Gate and/or Skyline trails. This is rated a "beginner" trip, meaning no badge prerequisites. Route will be up to 5 miles and 750' elevation gain (300 feet per mile), and probably not suitable for those with no prior snowshoe experience. Contact leader with any questions.

  • Mileage: 4.5 mi

  • High Point Elevation: 6,190 ft
  • Pace: 1-1.5 mph moving

We will meet at Longmire National Inn parking lot, near the museum and the rest rooms at 8:30. Chain up if required.  Gate should open around 9:00 a.m.  If gate, road or weather conditions rule out Paradise, we will snowshoe a route starting from Longmire.  Participants can organize carpooling to Longmire, and from Longmire to Paradise.  More info closer to trip.

We will probably cross Edith Creek on a bridge (see photo on trip listing web page) and take the Golden Gate trail overlooking Edith Basin.  Exact route will depend on weather, any avalanche warnings, and other prevailing conditions.  This trip is suitable for participants who may or may not have badges, but have some snowshoe experience.  Length and elevation gain are toward the high end of The Mountaineers' "Easy" classification.  Expect average rate of climb of 300 feet per mile, with some sections steeper and some more gradual.  Leader's permission is required because it is more challenging than many "beginner" trips and is not suitable for a "beginner" with no snowshoe experience or knowledge regarding appropriate gear or clothing, etc.   Please contact the leader with any questions.  More information will be sent by email to registered and waiting listed participants  closer to the event.
