Nordic Pass, Hyak Lake & Mount Catherine

Trip

Basic Snowshoe - Nordic Pass

A snowshoe adventure from Silver Fir Lift base up through the trees to Hyak Lake, then onwards up toward the knob above Rockdale Lake, as an alternate route off the Nordic Pass trail. In a prior trip this was knicknamed Olallie Knob. As a Basic trip, we will be traveling in avalanche safe terrain, mostly through forest, approximately than 1000 ft elevation gain, estimating up to 5 miles round trip.

We will plan to approach from the Silver Fir lift lot, not from the more common Hyak lot.   Navigation will be key, so the leader will look to all participants to be engaged in this, beyond the usual trail breaking.   Beyond Hyak Lake we will navigate towards Rockdale Lake.

We will travel as a group, evaluating our route, conditions, and depending on leader and group energy we may elect a turnaround short of the pass.

Leader will send his route plan to participants prior to the trip.

All will be expected to have map and compass, and to use them for your pre-trip planning.  Hopefully many participants will have GPS skills and/or ability to help with map and compass.    GPS as an add-on to their navigation kit is very welcome!
