9am at Longmire, and the end of the parking area nearest the Ranger station.

Depending on where people are coming from we will probably arrange carpools from town, but we have to stop at Longmire regardless to get permits.

Update: Due to a winter storm that is forecast to bring new snow and 30mph winds Saturday night and Sunday morning this trip has been changed from an overnight to a single-day snowshoe of Mazama ridge.

Easy pace end of season winter camping trip at Mazama Ridge at Mount Rainier NP.  We will snowshoe the 1.5 miles from Paradise to Mazama Ridge where we will set up tents then spend our free time exploring the area or just hanging out.  The plan is to hike in together, set up camp together (probably including building a common kitchen area), then take it from there.  We will be mindful of safety but otherwise our mood will guide us.

In addition to your usual winter camping kit, hard-sided bear canisters are also required, not due to bears but for provide protection from smaller animals.  This is a Park Service requirement.

Drivers: If you have an AWD or 4WD vehicles please consider driving. The Park Service requires that all vehicles traveling up to Paradise carry chains, even AWD/4WD.   They frequently set up roadblocks to check that vehicles are carrying chains, so this is real.

Regarding "Leader's Permission Required": This trip is open to all members with previous, relevant winter camping experience.  Graduates of the Winter Camping, Glacier Travel, and Basic Climbing courses automatically have permission to register - no need for you to ask, just sign up.  Also, if you have been on a winter camping trip with the leader before, same thing: no need to ask, just sign up.  Other folks: before signing up please send the leader a brief email summarizing your winter camping experience.  This trip does not provide any winter camping instruction!

As with all winter trips, weather and avalanche conditions are factors.  This trip may be moved or cancelled if conditions are unsafe or unfavorable.
