Trip

Basic Snowshoe - Mazama Ridge (Mount Rainier)

Moderate out-and-back snowshoe to Mazama Ridge and potentially Faraway Rock. Before Jan 25th, reserved for Tacoma Basic snowshoeing students who need additional trips in order to graduate; if you meet the requirement, please send me an email and I'll add you to the roster.

  • Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 5.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,200 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,788 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph or 500 ft/hr

We will meet at the National Park Inn parking lot early in the morning; exact time to be communicated by email, but expect something within 7-9am depending on the weather and expected traffic.

The plan is to start from Paradise with a 1.3 mile, 600 ft gain warm-up on Valley Road and up the 4th Crossing Trail to reach the Mazama Ridge Trail. Next, time permitting, we will cross county lines -- from Pierce to Lewis -- in a 1.1 mile gentle descent towards Faraway Rock. Time to enjoy a lunch break! Then, after some ups and downs totaling 600 ft gain, we will be back to where we started.

Here is a map of the loop, select Mazama + Faraway.

We'll trek at a moderate pace with brief stops to enjoy the views. Participants should have a fitness level that's appropriate for the distance and elevation gain.

Chains will need to be carried in all cars. Those driving front or rear wheel drive vehicles should anticipate being required to install chains after the gate and before proceeding up to Paradise.
