Basic Snowshoe - High Lakes Loop (winter)

Springtime snowshoe loop exploring SE Paradise: Mazama Ridge, Faraway Rock, Louise Lake, and Reflection Lakes. Before April 20th, reserved for Tacoma Basic snowshoeing students who need additional trips in order to graduate; then open to all Basic snowshoeing students/graduates.

  • Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,600 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,793 ft
  • Pace: 2 mph

We will meet at the main Paradise parking lot early in the morning; exact time to be communicated by email, but expect something within 7-9am, depending on the weather and expected traffic.

The plan is to start with a 1.3 mile, 600 ft gain warm-up on Valley Road and up the 4th Crossing Trail to reach the Mazama Ridge Trail. Next, we will cross county lines (from Pierce to Lewis) in a 1.1 mile gentle descent towards Faraway Rock. From there, we'll continue descending (traveling above Louise Lake) for 0.7 miles to reach the one and only Wonderland Trail. Time to enjoy a lunch break by Reflection Lakes! Then, after some ups and downs totaling 800 ft gain, we will be back to where we started.

Here is a map of the loop. (Note that we are not necessarily taking the High Lakes Trail.)

We'll trek at a moderate pace with brief stops to enjoy the views. Participants should have a fitness level that's appropriate for the distance and elevation gain.

As this is a springtime trip, snow and trail conditions may vary, so please bring both snowshoes and microspikes and be prepared to transition between them as needed during the trip.

Chains will need to be carried in all cars. Those driving front or rear wheel drive vehicles should anticipate being required to install chains after the gate and before proceeding up to Paradise.

This is a mentored snowshoe trip, with Gene Keltgen mentoring Rodrigo Franco Toso.
