  • Adults
  • Strenuous 3, Technical 3, Snow Scramble, Basic Glacier Climb, Basic Rock Climb, Basic Alpine Climb, Intermediate Rock Climb
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 17.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 7,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph 1000ft/hr

When requesting leader permission, please:

  • Use the permission request on the website, not direct email
  • Provide information on your prior overnight glacier climb experience
  • Provide information on your prior rock scrambling experience and your comfort scrambling loose rock. You will also need to be proficient in crampon on/off transitions
  • Confirm that you are willing to pay for your share of a wilderness/camping permit ($11) and for a climbing permit ($70, good all season)
  • Confirm that you are OK with a plan B or C (below) if the camping permit is not available

The camping/wilderness permit for the area is walkup because reservable permits are already taken. If we can't get the permit for Meany Crest, we will opt for one of the following, or similar:

  • Ascend from White River Campground towards Glacier Basin, cross St Elmo's Pass, cross the Winthrop Glacier and camp on Curtis Ridge (first campsite for Liberty Ridge climb, not to be confused with Camp Curtis). Then, return the same.way, or descend towards Mineral Mountain and return via Wonderland. If time permits, may be able to summit Steamboat Prow and Mount Ruth on the way back, or Old Desolate and Crescent. (This plan needs some more research). This would also require a walkup permit.
  • One day ascent of Steamboat Prow and Mount Ruth (Basic Alpine, not Basic Glacier)
  • One or two day ascent of Tamanos, Governor's Ridge, and possibly Middle Cowlitz Chimney (from the East, this would be exploratory)

White River Wilderness Information Centre on Saturday  7am

Recommend car camping in the area the night before. Options include White River Campground (walk-in, fee) or outside the park.
