Basic Backpack - Lake George & Gobblers Knob

Student friendly one-night trip to Lake George with Gobbler's Knob day hike.

  • Moderate
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 11.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,500 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,415 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2 mph

This student-friendly trip will include an opportunity to practice the skills learned in a basic backpacking course. It is also open to experienced backpackers.

After gear check and pack-fitting at the trailhead, the hike to camp is on a service road for the first 3.5 miles, making for easy walking and side-by-side chatting. We will set up camp and then continue with day packs to Gobbler's Knob for our best views of Rainier. We will only carry overnight packs for about 4.5 miles and 1400' gain and we will not be in a hurry.

We can typically expect a pit toilet and bear pole at MRNP backcountry camps and will confirm in August. If not, other appropriate food storage methods will be needed and packing out our waste will be strongly encouraged.

Staring from the Westside Road/Dry Creek Trailhead. Carpool meetup spot outside of the park TBA. Time TBA.

Everyone should bring $10 to cover the cost of the camping permit reservation (cash or venmo ok). Gas costs should be shared within each carpool, as well as park entry fee ($30) if nobody in the car has an America the Beautiful pass.
