Basic Alpine Climb - Mount Shasta/Avalanche Gulch

This is a plan B climb for our canceled Olympus this weekend and a trainer for our late June Rainier climb. If you are not on either of those climbs, or have not climbed with us before, please do not request permission!!!

Room for 1 more in our car. Leaving Olympia at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, motelling in Salem Oregon to meet the following schedule:

Fri: permits, ranger station beta and hike to horse camp at 8100 ft (2.1mi, 1100ft)

Sat: to Helen lake  (1.7mi) at 10,400. Set up camp, melt water.

Sat/Sun: alpine start to summit (2.2mi) at 14,179 by 11am. Glissade down if possible. Hike back to horse camp.

Mon: out, breakfast and home.

Plan C would be the Clear Creek route on the east side of the mountain, which has 8000+ fit of climbing in 8mi, is less technical and more protected from ice.

  • Mountain boots that can accept crampons (not hiking boots)
  • Crampons
  • An ice axe (not technical ice tools)
  • A back pack (40 to 60 liters)
  • Helmet
  • Fleece or puffy jacket
  • Rain jacket and full-zip rain pants
  • Trekking poles 
  • $30 permit, $25 hotel, $100+ for gas, $ for meals.
  • Warm gloves or mittens
