Please note that Remmel adds +/- 8 miles to the advertised trip length. So this will be 10-12 miles/day in addition to the four mountains we will be climbing. Cathedral is a climb with a tricky and famous "gap" to cross at the top. The other three peaks are scrambles. Three Bulgers and up to six top 200 peaks....if you are into that sort of thing!
Unless we have climbed together recently, when you reach out for permission please describe your current season conditioning, experience with multiday trips, and comfort with exposed 4th/low 5th scrambling.
Back up weekend for this trip is the following weekend.
We'll cover a ton of ground on this one and climb a bunch of mountains....should be awesome!
Here is a preliminary itinerary:
- Day 1: Drive to TH, hike ~15 miles to Four Point Lake, and make camp
- Day 2: alpine start, climb Remmel, and return to camp. Break camp, hike north to Remmel Creek Trail, climb Amphitheatre main summit and as many of the subsidiary summits as the group is interested in, descend to Upper Cathedral Lake, and make camp.
- Day 3: alpine start, break camp, hike to Cathedral Pass, and climb Cathedral. Return to gear and follow Boundary Trail to headwaters of Cathedral Creek and climb The Pope. Continue on Boundary Trail to Apex Pass, drop packs, and climb Apex. Return to gear, hike SE on Boundary Trail to Tungsten Creek crossing, drop packs, and climb Wolframite. Return to gear, hike to Tungsten Mine, and camp.
- Day 4: hike ~15 miles back to cars
Team will need to decide between the Chewuch River Trail TH and the "Windy Cutoff" TH for departure point.
Either way, we meet at the Mazama Store at 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning before heading to the TH.
