Backpack - Yellow Aster Butte

Take in the beauty of the North Cascades with flower meadows, stunning ridges and stellar 360 views of Mounts Shuksan, Baker and Tomyhoi in this moderately strenuous backpack: 7.5 mile round-trip with 2,550 feet of elevation gain.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 7.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,550 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,150 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph

TBD

Trip Plan: We will hike at a slower pace of 1.5 mph. The first two miles are the most strenuous and quite steep, some of it along an avalanche path. On these tougher areas we will hike at the pace best for the entire group. A mile and a half from the trail head, we will reach the Yellow Aster Butte Junction where we will head left to continue to our destination for another 2.25 miles to a lovely wildflower meadow to set up camp.

Because this is an overnight, we will not be doing an additional hike to Tomyhoi Peak, which is far more strenuous than reaching our destination.

In addition to your ten essentials, please be prepared for cooler weather at this elevation, and as always in the PNW, rain gear, as weather can be fickle, even in late August. Bring gloves, hat and insulating jacket for the evening. A three season tent and sleeping bag should be sufficient. There can be some minor snow patches to cross. Micro-spikes may be a good addition as a safety precaution. Bugs are prevalent in August, please pack bug spray.

Food storage: Either an Ursack or bear canister.

Meeting time and place will be determined closer to the trip. Please note this will be a very early morning start, as most of the sites to set up camp are said to fill up early. Trail head pass required: Northwest Forest Pass.
