10AM on Friday June 5 at the Tubal Cain trailhead.  Leader will help to facilitate carpools and ferry schedules

Although open to all club members over age 18, this trip is also part of the B3 Backpacking Building Blocks series and eligible for B3 course credit. In addition, this backpack will have a practical instructional/learning focus and offer experience in proper gear use and camp set-up techniques.

Walking in through forest and a rhododendron canopy, we’ll set up camp in the woods at about 3.5 miles just past the Tubal Cain mine, or if weather permits and the group is feeling energetic, up on the ridge at Buckhorn Pass (which would require carrying water).  Then we’ll spend the afternoon wandering the ridge over to Marmot Pass with the vast expanse of the Olympics spreading before us across the deep Dungeness gorge.  The next morning we’ll head back to the trailhead, put overnight gear in the car, and dayhike from the same parking area up a back way to the summit of Mt Townsend (~13 mi, 3200’ gain) for views across the Puget Sound and over to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  Patchy snow may remain at the passes and peak tops.
