Backpack - Snowgrass Flat & Goat Lake Basin

This 2-night, 3-day Goat Rocks loop is a replacement hike for one that was cancelled. This trip is the popular Snowgrass flat, Goat Lake loop with optional side trips of Old Snowy, Hawkeye Point and Heart Lake. Total mileage with optional side trips is 26 miles with 7,600' of gain and loss.

Snowgrass Flat trailhead at 9:30 AM Sunday. There is an option for a carpool. Details to be sent by leader.

Day 1:  Snowgrass Flat to camp in Snowgrass Flat, 6 miles, 1800' of gain. Optional side trip along PCT to Old Snowy with views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Goat Lake and possibly Mt. St. Helen's. 

Day 2:  Hike 4 miles to Goat Lake and set up camp.  Side trips to Hawkeye Point for amazing views of the lake and surrounding mountains and then on to Heart Lake and back, an additional 4.6 miles

Day 3: Finish the loop hiking 7.5 miles with view from Goat Ridge lookout site and along Goat Ridge trail.

Leader permission is required. Send me an email with similar backpacking experience this summer. Include details like mileage and elevation gain per day.  If you already have extensive, recent Mountaineers experience, just mention that and I'll check your history.

The Ten Essentials plus overnight gear which may include:

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • UR sack with appropriate liner (Opsack or equivalent) or Bear canister
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste. pack out TP
