Backpack - Seven Lakes Basin & High Divide

Midweek Seven Lakes Basin / High Divide backpack -- one of the premier backpacking destinations in the Olympic National Park, with stunning views of Mount Olympus, waterfalls, old-growth forest, meadows and subalpine lakes, along with abundant wildlife. The planned loop is 3-days, 19 miles / 4000’ gain, with a side trip to Appleton Pass (6 miles / 2000’ gain).

Tuesday, Aug 20:  Leader has reserved a campsite at Sol Duc for an early start on Wednesday.

Wednesday, Aug 21:  Meeting at Sol Duc Trailhead with an early start time (start time to be communicated via email prior to the trip).  Hike from Sol Duc Falls trailhead to Rocky Creek camp (5 miles, 1200’ gain).  After setting up camp, optional hike with lighter packs to Appleton Pass (additional 6 miles RT, 2000’ gain).

Thursday, Aug 22:  Hike from Rocky Creek to Heart Lake  and the High Divide trail (3.0 miles and 2000' gain) and then on to Lunch Lake Basin (4 miles, with minimal gain and 800' loss as we get closer to the lake basin).

Friday, Aug 23:  Complete the loop from Lunch Lake on the High Divide and Deer Lake trails (7 miles with 600’ gain up from Lunch Lake basin then a more gradual 3000' loss back to Sol Duc trailhead).

Trip is weather dependent:  A forecast for significant rain or wildfire smoke will cancel this trip.

Bear canisters are required.  All food, garbage and scented items must be stored in bear canisters.  If you do not have access to a bear canister, please notify the leader in advance – they are available from the Olympic National Park WIC in Port Angeles, when we pick up the permit.

Abundant wildlife:  Expect to see black bears, mountain goats, elk and deer on this trip.

Shared cost is $20/person -- $8/night for permit + Sol Duc reserved campsite.  Plus carpooling and ferry fees.   

Olympic / National Park Pass required for all vehicles.
