B3 students with moderate fitness will love this backpack of about 3 miles while climbing 1,700’ through alpine meadows and up the Park Butte Trail to find a camp with the potential for stunning views. Enjoy an afternoon side trip to Park Butte Lookout. This trip is oriented toward B3 students, but is open to all qualified Mountaineers.

Meet at Park Butte Trailhead at 9:45 am Saturday with packs ready to hit the trail at 10am.  Northwest Forest Pass required.

A favorite backpacking destination with lookout, volcano views, and huckleberries. Saturday hike approximately 2.5 miles while climbing 1,500’ through alpine meadows and up the Park Butte Lookout Trail to make camp. Then enjoy an afternoon 2-mile trip with 700’ gain to the lookout. Sunday morning we will break camp and take a side trip up the Railroad grade trail before descending 1,700’ back to the trailhead.

Meet at Park Butte Trailhead at 9:45 am Saturday with packs ready to hit the trail at 10am. We will hike about 1.5-2mph as a group. We will return to the Trailhead by mid-day  Sunday.

THIS TRIP FALLS WITHIN THE COVID-19 GUIDELINES FOR A PHASE 2 COUNTY.  To participate you must commit to the Covid-19 Code of Conduct and be prepared to follow these expectations throughout the trip.  In particular, all participants must carry a mask/face-covering ready to pull up quickly anytime they get within 6 feet of someone on the trail, and to also have hand sanitizer handy. We will maintain 6’ distance from one another and avoid gear sharing. Any participant exposed to or suspecting virus symptoms must cancel from the trip.

Check the weather forecast before packing. Gear and food planning details will be provided by the leader in advance of the trip.

Water source available near camp. Backcountry toilet may not be available near camp, prepare for Leave No Trace Toileting.

The Ten Essentials plus overnight gear which includes:

  • Tent 
  • Stove and fuel (unless you plan to eat only cold food)
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister, UrSack or extra stuff sack and cord designated for hanging food
  • Cooking pot/pan, mug and spoon
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
