We will hike at a leisurely pace. This trail travels along Royal Creek through beautiful forest and meadows and crosses avalanche chutes as it climbs up into Royal Basin. Our permit allows us to camp at Royal Lake, an alpine lake set in one of the most beautiful areas of the Olympics. Our campsite is in Olympic National Park, but parking at the trailhead requires a Northwest Forest Pass for each car. The trees in Royal Basin are not suitable for hanging food, so Olympic National Park REQUIRES campers to use hard sided "animal resistant food containers," aka bear cannisters.
