Backpack - Robinson Creek and Pass

Hey all, a new place to go in the North Cascades near Mazama. Three day/two night trip up a lovely canyon to a pass just east of the more famous Harts Pass. Expect early season wildflowers, a pleasant creekside camp and possible snow travel and off-trail exploration near the pass. Leader Permission is required. Please read the Leader's Notes for details.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 23.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,500 ft
  • Pace: 1.25-1.5 MPH up and 2.25 MPH Down

This should be a fun new place to explore with flowers, water, snow and canyon views. A ford may be necessary to cross the creek and snow travel in likely on the middle day exploration hike up to the pass.

Here is the proposed Gaia Route:  https://www.gaiagps.com/public/sBi4K1kFmdDfrW7EodT0tQO5/

Due to the various atypical travel issues on this trip it is designated a Leader's Permission only trip.  Please answer/address all of the following questions when requesting permission:

1)  This trip has 2,500' of gain the first day with a full pack and another 2,500'+ gain on the second day with a light 'day pack'.  Are you in condition to do this sort of trip?   What have you done this season to demonstrate appropriate conditioning?

2)  We may need to ford the creek if the log crossing in infeasible.  Are you comfortable with a moderately difficult stream ford--possibly up to the knee?   Will you bring fording shoes?

3)  The middle day will likely have some snow travel.  Are you comfortable with this?  Will you bring microspikes?

4)  On the middle day we may explore off-trail, nothing too difficult.  Are you comfortable with this?

Please submit your requests ASAP and I will get back to you.  It could be a few days before I get back to you as I will be out of cell service during a few other backpack trips in the next two weeks.  Rob

Continue 7.5 miles on pavement and a further mile and a quarter on gravel FR 5400 (basically the same road, now called Harts Pass Road) to the Robinson Creek Trailhead on the right side of road.  If you see the Ballard Campground you have gone to far.
