9-11 mile roundtrip; 700 feet total elevation gain, pace 1.5 MPH This is a close-in backpacking option in the Snoqualmie National Forest & Alpine Lakes Wilderness, off exit 34, I-90. Special features of this backpack include waterfall and alpine lake viewings and mossy old-growth forest, with much of the trail with eyesight or earshot of flowing waters. Our campsite will be 4.5-5.5 miles from the trailhead. We’ll have the opportunity to optionally hike up to Snoqualmie Lake (an additional 6-8 mile, 1,400 ft. of elevation, roundtrip) in the afternoon after setting up camp. On our way out on Sunday we’ll have the option to temporarily stash our backpacks and take a 2.6 mile, 1200 vertical side-trip to Marten Lake. Resources: Backpacking Washington by Craig Romano, trip 29; Green trails maps 174 and 175. The Middle Fork forest Service road is in very poor shape; we'll be traveling on it for about 10 miles after we exit I-90. I have a Nissan Xterra SUV with high clearance and can take four passengers. We will need one other vehicle that can handle the rugged and rutted road.
