Backpack - Oregon Butte

Restored lookout, sweeping views of ridges and canyons, meadows, wildflowers, and wildlife along Oregon Butte trail.

9:00am at Godman Guard Station (FS road 4608) for convoy to trailhead parking area.   Do not park at Teepee campground (parking for car campers only).

Late snowmelt on upper access road and trail may drive reschedule.  

Exploratory backpack to Oregon Butte, with optional group hike day 1 from base camp to  Danger Point.    Photo-oriented backpack with leisurely to moderate pace.  Car camping recommended night prior to backpack at Teepee camp or nearby- see Umatilla NF /Pomeroy RD or links below for camping info.  We'll plan to return to trailhead by 1pm on last day. 

Will survey group closer to trip date for option to add 1 day for further exploration nearby to Indian Corral.

Be aware of drive times:  approx 4.5-5 hours Seattle to Pomeroy, or 5-5.5 hours Portland to Pomeroy.  Add 1-1.5 hours for 50 miles from Pomeroy to trailhead area.

Bearproof food canister or other bearproof food storage recommended.  Canisters may be available at Pomeroy Ranger District office.

The Ten Essentials plus overnight gear which may include:

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister or extra stuff sack and cord designated for hanging food
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
