Backpack - Olympic Hot Springs

Experience one or more of the over 20 relaxing pools of Olympic Hotsprings on Saturday afternoon, when we share them with day hikers, and Saturday evening, when we have the pools to ourselves, camping at nearby Boulder Creek Campground, with a short, easy backpack in on Saturday morning and out on Sunday morning.

Meet at 10 AM Saturday on the front porch of the Olympic National Park Wilderness Information Center (WIC) at 3002 Mt. Angeles Road, Port Angeles, reached by turning left from US 101 in Port Angeles onto Race Street, which becomes Mt. Angeles Road.  The WIC is  at the south end of town on the right side of the road.

At the WIC the leader will register the entire group and pay camp fees of $8 per night per person over age 15.  Then we will caravan a short distance to the Elwha Road entrance booth to Olympic National Park, where we may be required to show one National Park Pass for each car or pay an entry fee.  Last September the booth was closed and passes were displayed on the cars at the trailhead parking lot.  The procedure will be clarified when we register at the WIC.

The next stop will be the visitor overlook of the site of the former Glines Dam, where we view exhibits of the contruction, tenure and removal of the dam.

Then we drive to the trailhead parking lot, where we begin our 2.5 mile hike on an abandoned road to our campsite at Boulder Creek Campground.  At the campground there is a metal structure where we hang our food at night and an outhouse.  Fires are not permitted there, so there cannot be any smores after dinner.

Food to bring with you needs to include a Saturday trail lunch, Saturday camp dinner and Sunday camp breakfast.  We will have hiked out before lunch time on Sunday, so you can either leave Sunday lunch food in your car or join us for an optional lunch stop at a restaurant in Port Angeles on the drive home.  There are restrooms at the WIC, the trailhead and the campground.

Bring a swimsuit to wear in the hotspring pools and a towel.
