Backpack - Olympic Coast South: The Wildcatter Coast

This 13 mile, 3-day backpack starts from the 3rd Beach trailhead and follows the wild Olympic coast to Toleak point, with wonderful beach side camping. Sheltered by a covey of spire-domed islands, the point served as an ancient Quileute fishing camp.

We need to meet at the Olympic Wilderness Center in Port Angeles at 8:00 AM.  Pre carpool locations are dependent on participant locations.

Although open to all club members over age 18, this trip is also part of the B3 Backpacking Building Blocks series and eligible for B3 course credit. In addition, this backpack will have a practical instructional/learning focus and offer experience in proper gear use and camp set-up techniques.

Once we travel the 6.4 miles to Toleak Point, we will be camping for two nights. This is not a hike down the beach. You will climb rope ladders with additional supportive ropes to navigate the steep trails ascending and descending the headland overpasses. Campfires are allowed and sunset can provide a nice show. This is a popular route with space for tents being plentiful. Seals are usually around, eagles are entertaining, and at low tide explore the tide pools. Olympic backcountry permit is required and will be obtained at the Olympic Wilderness Center in Port Angeles before driving to the coast. A bear canister is required to keep the raccoons out of your food. Carpooling is encouraged as the trip to the coast is 3+ hours of driving.   Leader Permission is required before signing up for the trip.
