Backpack - Olympic Coast North: The Shipwreck Coast

The dates have been moved to April 28 - May 1st due to ludicrous amounts of rain. It's March! It's rainy! It's cold! Perfect time to dust off the raingear and keep fingers crossed for decent weather on an epic mosey down the Shipwreck Coast.

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 20.2 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 260 ft
  • Pace: 1-1.5

Meet at Rialto Beach and shuttle up to Ozette Ranger Station. More details and decisions closer to the trip date with participant input taken into account.

Covid-19 - All participants need to be fully vaccinated and provide the leader with a copy of your CDC card when registering.

Depending on tides, there may be overlanding via rope ladders. Be comfortable hauling yourself and your backpack up steep, muddy and slippery embankments. Also, March on the Coast can be very chilly at night (think mid-30s), so plan accordingly and bring warm enough gear to move and sleep comfortably!

There will be a $24 per person wilderness permit fee that you can Venmo/Paypal me prior to the trip start date. For parking, you will also need either an Olympic Parks Pass or an America the Beautiful pass.

Bear canisters are required on the Coast.

I'll send out more information including a map with mileage per day, where we will camp etc. closer to the trip date and after I have acquired permits. I intend on having this be an easy going trip, spreading the 20 miles over 4 days and enjoying tide pooling when we get the chance.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns prior to the trip and I'll do my best to help out in any way I can! My email is erica.an.rickard@gmail.com
