Backpack - Island & Rainbow Lakes

This is strenuous a two-day backpack trip through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, 15 miles with 3,400 feet of total elevation gain. We will start at the Talapus Lake trailhead and visit several lakes before camping near Island Lake. The next day we will hike to Mason Lake and then out to the Ira Spring Trail-head.

 We will carpool to the destination.  We will need at least three drivers for the carpool for six people.  Other meeting detail to be worked out prior to trip.

Although open to all club members over age 18, this trip is also part of the Foothills Branch "B3" Backpacking Building Blocks course and eligible for B3 course graduation credit, In addition, this backpack will have an instructional/learning focus and offer experience in proper gear use and camp set-up techniques.

You should be able to hike 10 miles in a day at 1.5-2.0 mph with your loaded backpack. 

The leader has a short trip-planning meeting scheduled for July 23rd.  Participants are expected to attend.   Details about gear requirements and assistance with food planning and packing will be discussed, as well as car shuttle details.
The trip may be cancelled or the destination changed if the weather turns poor.

The Ten Essentials plus overnight gear which may include:

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister or extra stuff sack and cord designated for hanging food
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
