Daily Itinerary:

Friday afternoon backpack in a quarter mile to campsite at Thomas Lake, where we will camp two nights. Pick huckleberries late Friday afternoon.

Saturday day hike 15 miles past 17 lakes with 1100 feet elevation gain, with a lunch stop and possible swim at one of the lakes.

Sunday backpack out a quarter mile and drive home, with a possible lunch stop together on the drive home.

This is an opportunity to day hike one of the most beautiful and scenic wilderness areas of Washington with minimal backpacking distance and gain. This area has an abundance of huckleberries, which should be ripe at the time of this trip, and time will be allowed for picking them. Mosquitos will be less prevalent than earlier in the season. If the weather is good, there will be multiple swimming opportunities. Participants will probably see more lakes on this trip than any other they go on. The precise hiking route will be determined by trail conditions, which will be inspected first hand by the leader prior to the trip.

Driving time to the meeting place is about three hours. We will caravan from the meeting place to the trailhead.

Recommended maps are GT 365S, Indian Heaven, for the hiking route, and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest map for the driving route near the trailhead. Additional information about Indian Heaven is available on line. Other notes based on pre-trip scouting visit in August:

The roads and trails both in excellent condition. The driving route is all paved except for the last ten miles, which is well maintained gravel roads (no chuck holes). All blowdowns have been cleared from all the trails of the proposed hiking route. The hot weather has dried up all streams, so there are no problem stream crossings. There are seven campsites near Thomas Lake. Two are large enough to accommodate a large group. No one else was camping at any of these sites when I was there. Driving time from Seattle to the meeting place in Cougar is about three hours. From there to the trailhead takes an additional hour, so the total driving time to the trailhead is four hours.
