Backpack - Huckleberry Creek Trail

Four days in the remote Northeast corner of Mount Rainier NP. Shuttle loop going up Huckleberry Creek, crossing off-trail over to Grand Park and then out via Lake Eleanor. Amazing flora and fauna and off-trail explorations to rarely visited lakes and valleys.

Enumclaw Safeway, Time TBD, mid to early morning Thursday. We will caravan to  first TH and drop-off second car at Lake Eleanor TH. Carpooling is discouraged per Covid-19 guidance.  

Itinerary

Day 1 From Huckleberry Creek TH  on FS RD 73, hike 6.9 miles, 2,938' gain, set up camp at Forest Lake Camp

Day 2 w/ day-pack hike 1.8 miles each way, 1146' gain/loss to Sourdough Ridge for stunning view of Mount Rainier. Pack up camp and head cross-county to Grand Park  via lake 5518 and Cold Basin to the North of Mount Fremont. Set up camp in Grand Park XC zone (2 nights). 5.3 miles, 1520' gain, 1623' loss. Evening: leisurely explore Grand Park's flowers and wildlife. Days total 8.9 miles, 2666' gain, 2769' loss.

Day 3 w/ day-pack hike South to Berkeley Park, visit off-trail, Affi  falls and adjoining pond and meadows on the way, then on to Skyscraper Mountain via Berkeley Park and Wonderland Trails. Return to Grand Park camp. RT 12 miles, 2025' gain, 684' loss to Skyscraper Mtn. and 684' gain, 2025' loss on the return.

Day 4 w/ day-pack ahead on the Northern Loop trail West toward Fire  Creek Camp to take in the amazing view of up the White River Chasm.  Return to camp and pack up. 2 miles RT 296' gain and loss total.  Pack up and head North toward Lake Eleanor TH with exploration of off trail-trail lakelets. 5.2 miles  708' gain, 1709' loss.  Car shuttle 4.13 miles back to Huckleberry TH.

This is a weather dependent trip.  There is a $20 reservation fee to share.  This is a Leader's Permission Only trip. Please explain in your response your conditioning that demonstrates you ability to complete and enjoy this rigorous trip. Please list recent or pass season's trips that are similar.  Please affirm your comfort with extensive off trail travel, snow travel and rustic camping in cross-country zone. Note: microspikes and trekking poles (two) are required for safe snow travel and creek crossings.
