Backpack - Eagle Cap Lakes Basin Loop

Returning for a second year in a row to this magically place, to see new sites. This hike will require a car drop as we will not be returning to the same trailhead

  • Elevation Gain: 7,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 9,810 ft
  • Pace: 1.75-2.0 mph + 1000 ft/hr

Carpooling and vehicle drops will be determined  via  group e-mail.  Please plan on being at the Trailhead  in Joseph, Oregon on Wednesday morning, July 25, 2018 at 9:00 am.  

Day One:  Start at the West Fork Trailhead (1820) and hike to Ice Lake.  Optional side trip to hike/scramble to the summit of Matterhorn and enjoy the sunset and surrounding views.  Total Distance 6.6 miles 2620 elevation gain.  Optional side trip is 2.6 miles RT with an elevation gain of 1930'.

Day Two.  Hike out from Ice Lake to Frazier Lake.  Total Distance is 10.1 miles with and elevation gain of 1660'

Day Three.  Hike up and over Glacier Pass down to the base of Eagle Cap.  Set-up camp and Hike to the Eagle Cap Summit for a breathtaking sunset and return to camp.  Total Distance is 9.47 miles, with an elevation gain of 3,380'

Day Four Hike over to Minam / Blue Lake, South side of Eagle Cap for a nice easy day of relaxation.   Total Distance is 4.4 miles with an elevation gain of 1450'

Day Five.  Hike out to East Fork Lostine River Trail (1662).  total distance 5.9 miles with an elevation loss of 1830'

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister or extra stuff sack and cord designated for hanging food
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
