Dosewallips River/Abandoned National Park Road

Trip

Backpack - Dosewallips River

Great location to start the backpacking season, dust off your gear and enjoy the Olympic NP. Great backpacking opportunity for B3 students.

  • Mileage: 19.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,400 ft

We will meet  at the trailhead at around 8:30 am. For people coming from Seattle/Eastside I recommend to take the 7:10 am ferry from Edmonds to Kingston. Car pooling is of course encouraged and I will provide more information as we get close to the trip date.

This is a great backpacking to start the season. The trail follows the old Olympic NP road to the former Dosewallips campground. The road has been washed out in several placed and converted to a trail. Elevation gain is quite gentle. As the campground was originally designed for car camping there is plenty of space, abundant water and some useful facility (picnic tables, bear resistant boxes). This may make Dosewallips campground a great backpacking experience for B3 students.

Just before the campground there are beautiful falls. We should be at the campground early afternoon, with plenty of time to set up camp and (optionally) explore the trail up to the valley for a couple of miles and enjoy the blooming Rhododendrons.

Night can be quite cold, and being in the Olympic NP, quite humid, so makes sure you have warm clothes and rain gear.
