Backpack - Chiwaukum, Larch & Scottish Lakes

Four day backpack to explore the high lakes and alpine basins of the Chiwaukum Range. Take in the fall colors (and full moon) in one of the premiere settings of Washington’s larch country

Day 1, hike along Chiwaukum Creek to Chiwaukum Lake. Camp at Chiwaukum Lake (9.5 miles, 3600’ elevation gain). Day 2, hike to Larch Lake  (2 miles, 800’ elevation gain). Day 3, hikeback to Chiwaukum Lake and then over McCue Ridge to Loch Eileen (7 miles, 1100’ elevation gain). Day 4, hike back to the trailhead (14 miles, 800’ elevation gain, 4100’ elevation loss). This is a dog-friendly trip and the leader will bring his dog. You are welcome to bring your dog; contact the leader if you would like to do so. (Note: the routes into this area described in Romano begin from Scottish Lakes High Camp. Required Equipment

The Ten Essentials plus overnight gear which may include:

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister or extra stuff sack and cord designated for hanging food
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
