Backpack - Cathedral Rock-Deception Pass-Tuck & Robin Lakes

This is a 2-day backpack up to Cathedral Pass and down to Deep Lake below Mount Daniel’s south flank. A moderate-strenuous 16 mile in-and-out route with 2,300 ft of elevation gain going in and 1,300 ft going out, rewarded at various points with views (weather permitting) of Mount Stuart, Granite Mountain, Cathedral Rock, Mount Daniel, and the Spinola Creek valley.

  • Very Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 16.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,380 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph

Early Sat., June 22, AM; location TBD after registration closes

This trip is open to all qualified Mountaineers members who have some backpacking experience, but preference will be given to backpackers with limited experience who want to stretch themselves. We will try for an average pace of 1.5 mph over 8 miles per day, so reasonable overall physical fitness will be essential. Although efficiency will be important, some time will be allotted for photography – so bring a camera.

The team will hike five miles up through trees from Cathedral Rock Trailhead to Cathedral Pass, where the route drops down three miles to Deep Lake (visible from the pass area). We will camp on the west side of Deep Lake. On Sunday, we will break camp and hike back up to Cathedral Pass and down to the trailhead. If time permits, we may take a 1-mile side-trip to Peggy’s Pond on our way out.

All drivers will need a Northwest Forest Pass. We will discuss transportation arrangements after registration has closed. While sharing of tents and stoves is fine, if you have new gear that you want to try out this is a good chance to do it. This trip will happen rain or shine, unless conditions are unsafe (in which case it will be canceled or the route will be changed).
