8:00 am Big Indian Gorge Trailhead, large parking area at far end of South Steens campground.

Enjoy a fall backpack in one of Steen Mountain Wilderness' remote scenic canyons amid fall colors, stream side to sweeping canyon views, waterfalls, and wildlife sights and sounds.
Recommended additional gear: trekking poles, sturdy boots, gaitors (short to knee length), wear bright orange item.
Please be aware of drive times: From Seattle, drive approx 7 3/4 hrs to Frenchglen OR; 8.5 hours to S. Steen CG. From Portland, drive approx 5 1/4 hrs to Frenchglen OR; 6 hrs to S. Steens CG.
Car camp prior night at South Steens CG or motel accommodations (Frenchglen Hotel).
Consider extending your exploration of Steens Mountain area and join the Mountaineers' backpack in Little Blitzen River Gorge 9/26-28, drive the full length of Steens Mountain Road to scenic viewpoints and short day hikes (Steens Summit 9,330 ft, Wildhorse Lake and Little Wildhorse Lake) preceding or following the backpack(s), more wildlife viewing (perhaps pronghorns, wild horses, and more), enjoy the fall colors (aspens at 7,500-8,000 ft and more) throughout the Steens.
Daily itinerary:
Day 1: Backpack from trailhead to Cottonwood camp. 6.5 miles with 1,270 ft gain. Camp is near a gravelly creek in cottonwood grove.
Day 2: Hike on increasingly faint trail and route from Cottonwood camp, traveling beyond creek fork to view castle-like formation and view waterfalls in upper gorge. Up to 6 miles RT and 1,200 ft gain.
Day 3: Return to trailhead. 6.5 miles with 1,270 ft loss.
