This is a mellow, beginner backpack trip with one night at Sunrise Camp and two nights at Berkeley Camp with a day hike to Grand Park. This is a high elevation hike (the trailhead is at 6400' and the high point on the trail is 6800'). If you are an experienced hiker and have your backpacking gear (or most of it) you are welcome to join us to discover the joys of sleeping on the ground! Give me a call so we can talk about your gear and whether this trip would be an appropriate and enjoyable one for you. We will stay together as a group, going at the pace of the slowest person. Berkeley Camp can be buggy so a head net is a good idea. (The bugs are very busy pollinating the wildflowers which are finally appearing.) Bears are active in the area so all food, trash and scented materials (everything!) must be in a hardsided canister or hung on the bear poles at both camps. Both camps have toilets. These are backcountry camps so stoves are required and open fires are prohibited. Day one: 1.3 miles with 200 feet of elevation loss so Sunrise Camp. Day two: is 3 miles and +500' and -800 to Berkeley Camp. Day three is 8 or 9 miles round trip day hike into Grand Park with not much elevation change. Day four is 4 miles with 1200' of elevation gain back to the trailhead.
