Note: change of destination due to low snowpack in Mt Margaret area. When I came back from skiing in the Blewett Pass area yesterday I checked out the snow conditions at the Mt Margret trailhead. Unfortunately while it was snowing at Blewett Pass -- it was raining at Snoqualmie. Checking the telemetry at Sno-tel and the WSDOT snow study sites indicates that the snow pack in the Mt Margaret area is barely above the minimum amount needed for this tour (A reading of 50 inches at the WSDOT Keechelus snow snowshed gauge at 3700ft is my minimum. (http://www.nwac.us/data/OSOSNO) The reading is currently 57 inches -- at the trailhead the snowpack is much thinner – maybe 24 inches) I’m going to switch the destination to Bullion Basin in the Crystal Mtn area. The snowpack in the area is in better condition – with the trailhead depth currently at 52 inches and the depth in the prime skiing areas in the 70’s This destination is still an M1 rated trip, is a bit shorter in distance wise, but a steeper ascent and a steeper descent. As a result, skiers without the ability to link turns on a single black diamond run at a ski area will find the descent too steep for enjoyable skiing. Because of the different destination – I’m going to designate the Renton “Grady Way” Park and Ride as the carpool spot and 6:30AM as the meeting time.
