Backcountry Ski/Snowboard - Mount St. Helens/Worm Flows

Single-day ski-mo ascent of Mt St Helens with anchor and rescue drills the afternoon before.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4, Winter Scramble, M2 Advanced Ski, Basic Alpine Climb
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,700 ft
  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

Subject to the forecast, plan is to meet at the Marble Mountain Snow Park on Friday early afternoon and bivy in the parking lot.   We'll get there in the early afternoon and practice our THIN anchors for belaying and crevasse rescue in the parking lot to get tuned up for the skimo mountaineering season.

I've set this trip to "Leader Permission" as (1) I'd like to give the folks who helped with our TGR Movie Night fundraiser first crack at slots and (2) I'd like to ensure that folks have the right skills for a safe and enjoyable trip.  Depending on how things go, I'll consider enlarging the trip, although in my experience groups larger than six tend to naturally split into smaller faster/slower groups.

Required skills/experience (please ensure that these are represented on your Mountaineers profile or in your request for Leader Permission):

  1. You should have completed either the  snow portion of the Basic Alpine curriculum or the Scramble curriculum.  We won't be on any meaningfully glaciated terrain, but safe snow travel skills and the ability to avoid and (worst case) arrest a fall are required.
  2. You should have a reasonably recent AIARE L1 (and ideally companion rescue) or better, as we'll be in avalanche terrain.
  3. Ideally this is not your first ski tour over 4000' of gain or in alpine terrain or on your current gear.  The altitude isn't as much of a challenge as with a trip to Camp Muir, but there will be rocky spots, icy kick turns, and other typical shenanigans.  ("Tools not jewels" applies.)
  4. Depending on the descent path, the terrain on Mt St Helens is hard blue square/easy black diamond, but "easy black diamond" shouldn't be the high end of your terrain tolerance.  The usual scenario is icy at the top and mashed potatoes at the bottom, so expect things to be a little more challenging than the slope angle would suggest.
  5. You should have experience traveling with ski crampons and/or boot crampons on your ski boots, as conditions and personal preferences may dictate their use.  You should have a pack that can carry your skis.

We will not need permits for this outing, but it's also likely to be a zoo/circus as this is the last weekend before permit season.  Consider bringing earplugs.
