Backcountry Ski/Snowboard - Arrowhead Mountain

Car Pool Location

North side of the Brickyard Park and Ride.

Car pools will leave at 7:00 am.

Take U.S. Highway 2 East from the Seattle area towards Stevens Pass. Drive past the ski area approximately 7 miles to where the divided highway ends. Park in the pullout on the west side of the eastern portal to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Tunnel (waypoint East Portal Access Rd on the trip map) or farther west along the highway at an access road (waypoint Access Road on the trip map).  Make sure you park west of the big pullout as this is where the snowplows turn around.  These are NOT designated as winter access public parking areas.

From the pullout, cross the highway and walk east along the highway for approximately 100 yards to Forest Road 687 (waypoint 00 Road on the trip map) that heads south just west of Henry Creek. (Starting elevation: approximately 2900 feet.)

Be at Forest Road 687 ready to start the tour at 9:00 am.

Tire chains are required.

This will be a moderate paced tour.  Trip participants must be within voice distance of the participant behind them.

Please complete the following sections of the AIARE field book PRIOR to arriving at the trail head: Avalanche Danger, Snowpack Discussion, Weather Forecast and identify FOUR or more locations where observations will be recorded.

Enclosed is a map, description and profile of the route.  We will return to the trail head prior to 4:00 pm.

The actual route will depend on snow, avalanche, weather conditions and participants’ abilities. If needed, an alternate, safer destination will be chosen by group consensus.

We will conduct a review of the day at the cars.
