Update Post Trip (see trip report): Steep (trending icy) slopes above ~8300 made the blocky nunatak west of the original cleaver a reasonable mid season destination, with last year’s summit at ~8200’ on the cleaver a good early season destination (gulley providing access during mid season has high rockfall hazard).
A very beautiful and strenuous loop scramble (~15 miles and ~6500’ gain) past Comet Falls and through Van Trump Park to a convenient high point near 9,200' on the cleaver just west of the Wilson Glacier. To ensure a safe and enjoyable time attendees should complete cross country scrambles of at least 4,500' elevation gain recently.
This trip starts and ends at Longmire with ascent via the Wonderland trail/Comet falls trail, and descent by way of the Rampart Ridge trail back to Longmire. We will be doing a bit of cross country map and compass travel between the Cougar Rock Picnic Area and the Comet falls trailhead to achieve the loop.
