- Trip leader is a member of both Cascade Grotto and Oregon Grotto and has been to all caves we will be exploring.
- Exact caves will be shared ahead of the trip. Possibilities include Lake Cave, Ole's Cave, Prince Albert Cave and Dollar-and-a-Dime Cave. Cave temperature is typically 50F year-round.
- These lava tubes we will explore are equivalent to a T3 rock scramble.
- Travel to the caves will involve off-trail travel and some light bushwacking but will not involve significant elevation. As a result this trip is appropriate for all fitness levels.
- There are no required tight squeezes in these caves, but travel may involve occasional stooping or hands and knees crawling. Knee pads are highly recommended.
- If you are claustrophobic or have ankle issues, this trip is likely not a good fit, but feel free to ask questions if you are interested.
- Cave locations will not be shared ahead of the trip, and proper caving etiquette will be shared ahead of the trip to include conservation and preservation of formations (yes, lava tubes have formations!).
- Please review the required equipment list in detail.
- Scrambling students are welcome to join, but if you are relying on this trip for rock scrambling trip credit, you must reach out to your course lead ahead of time to verify that it will count. IMO it should, but I'm not the course leader for any branch's scramble course right now. :)
- For assistant leader spot, caving experience is preferred but not required. Assistant leaders should email me for permission, even if I know you very well!
- I will likely be in the area caving on Saturday as well (probably with the Grotto). You are welcome to join, if interested.
- If you have read all of these notes are still interested, send me a permission request and include the word MAMMOTH in the email.
