Alpine Scramble - Tomyhoi Peak/Southeast Route

Two day trip to scramble Tomyhoi Peak

  • Technical 4, Strenuous 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,500 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 7,435 ft
  • Pace: 500-1000 ft/hr, 1-2 mph

This scramble is fairly moderate except for the summit rock ridge which is narrow and exposed for about 40 ft leading to a small summit.

We will take ice axes and crampons for a short section of snow/ice/glacier that we cross to get to the rock scramble.

There will be outstanding views if the weather is clear.

The tentative plan is to hike from cars to camp, set up camp, and then do the scramble on day 1.     On day 2 we will pack up after breakfast, then hike up Yellow Aster Butte on our way back to the cars.     If weather is better on day 2, we might do the scramble on day 2 instead.

We will follow LNT principles

Expectations are that participants are in condition for the trip, are confident with the T4 and exposure, will be on time and bring the required gear, and work together as a team.

In case of smoke or bad weather the trip will be canceled or changed.

This is a mentored scramble lead.

Leader's permission is required due to the exposure.   When requesting permission, please indicate other exposed scrambles you have done.   You can request permission anytime, but signup doesn't open until 7/31 at 8 pm.

Meet at Tomyhoi Lake / Yellow Aster Butte trailhead at 9 a.m.    Start hiking around 9:30.  This is a several hour drive from Seattle area.    The last few miles are on a rough road.   There are no facilities at the trailhead.  NW Forest Pass is required for parking.

More/updated details will be sent to participants in pre-trip email.
