Alpine Scramble - Tomyhoi Peak/Southeast Route

Three-day backpacking scramble to climb Yellow Aster Butte, Tomyhoi, Keep Kool Butte, and Excelsior Peak. The last day involves crossing six miles of wildflower meadows before dropping 4,000 feet to the cars. Gorgeous peaks, gorgeous views, gorgeous wildflower meadows.

Ash Way Park and Ride Lot, Lynnwood, 8 am.

Day one: drive the town of Glacier and have lunch, then drop one car off at the Excelsior Pass trailhead and drive to the Yellow Aster Butte trail head. Hike to the tarns at the base of Yellow Aster Butte and set up camp. Climb Yellow Aster Butte.

Day two: climb Tomyhoi. Tomyhoi involves crossing a very steep, very exposed remnant glacier. Participants must be very comfortable using crampons on steep, hard snow. Tomyhoi involves climbing steep, very exposed rock. Participants must be very comfortable climbing on steep rock, such as the White Ledges on Kaleetan. Return to camp. This is a short day, only about 4 miles round trip.

Day three: the day starts with about six miles of ridge running, through six miles of wildflower meadows at the peak of the wildflower season, before dropping 4,000 feet in 4 miles of steep trail to the car stashed at the Excelsior Pass trailhead. Participants must be able to carry their packs for ten miles.  Dinner in Glacier, then drive home.

Trip will be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts rain on the second or third day.
