Alpine Scramble - Tamanos-Banshee Traverse

A very strenuous and gorgeous traverse of Tamanos and Banshee Peak by way of the Sarvant Glacier valley. This 17 mile and 5,400 foot gain trip has 5 miles of cross country travel, and is only for folks that have done recent strenuous trips.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 3
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 17.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,400 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 7,400 ft

Various P&Rs to accommodate attendees, then 6AM at the White River Ranger Station for a last use of rest rooms. The early start allows time to setup the car shuttle, ensure a parking place at the Fryingpan Creek trailhead, and to fully utilize all daylight hours.

The trip starts at the Owyhigh Lakes trailhead just after leaving a car at the Fryingpan Creek trailhead for the end of our traverse. We will ascend Tamanos by way of the valley/lake on its northern aspect before traversing to reach the 6000' col on its southern aspect.  From this col we will traverse and descend to reach Wright Creek at ~5500', then ascend to the 7000' col just east of Banshee by way of the stagnant Sarvant Glacier (no glacier travel gear needed).  After ascending Banshee, we will descend to and follow the Wonderland Trail to reach Summerland and our car at the Fryingpan Creek trailhead.  Photos from prior trips to this venue can be seen here.
