I tried this 3 times last April and had to cancel twice due to weather or avaanche conditions. The third time, we got as far as Spark Plug lake, 750 feet below the summit. I would like to succeed this year. This trip works best in the spring, when snow covers the Devil's club and other unsavory brush. (See Mike Sweeney's report of an attempt to do this route without snow cover. It ain't pretty.) Our route starts at Scenic and follows the Surprise Lake trail to 3360, then bears SW toward Little Spark Plug Lake. The crux of the trip is trying to find a path through the cliff band from 4400 to 4600. Please prepare for a long day, this can be an arduous trip. Due to the challenging terrain and strenuous nature of this trip, this trip is not appropriate for scramble students. If weather prevents us from reaching the summit, this trip will be rescheduled for Friday May 2.
