Alpine Scramble - South Sister

Fall is the perfect season to backpack and scramble South Sister in Central Oregon!

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 3
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 13.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,900 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 10,358 ft
  • Pace: 1,000ft/hr

Olympia group will leave after 6pm Thursday Oct 11 or early Friday morning, October 12. Place TBD.

Plan right now is to reach the TH Friday, Oct. 12 and backpack up to Moraine Lake.

Saturday, October 13, we'll set out at first light (6:15am) and do the last 3800ft or so to the summit of South Sister  with lighter packs, summiting by 11:15am (turnaround 12:30), getting back to camp by 3:30 and TH by 5pm. Dinner in Bend, and home.

Expect snow, which will slow us down (hence the generous summit schedule). Bring warm, waterproof boots and microspikes and/or crampons (TBD), helmets and poles and/or ice ax (also TBD).

If Friday is the obvious better day, we can leave on Thursday after work and do this as a 1-day climb Friday Oct. 12, possibly camping at Devil's Lake (TH) Fri. night. Please be willing to leave Thurs evening by if you sign up.

This is a non-technical scramble, but the length, steepness, scree slog and altitude have brought people to tears. Thus, leader's permission is required.

This scramble boasts some of the prettiest views in the northwest - Mt. Hood, Jefferson, Broken Top, Bachelor, Middle and North Sister, plus the volcanic landscape of Central Oregon are all visible on a clear day!
